Project-Based Learning in Social Studies Education
Concept of Project-Based Learning
Project-based learning is a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges. The students learn by engaging in personally meaningful projects. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a more profound knowledge of the subjects they're studying.
The theme for the project-based learning assignment will be "Oh, The Places: Why Are They Significant?" Students will research an area in the world and tell the class about it. This theme aligns with the Maryland Standard 3.0 Geography: Students shall inquire about the role of culture, technology, and the environment in the location, distribution, and impact of human activities using geographic tools and spatial thinking to demonstrate a place's significance.
Expectations for the Project-Based Learning Assignment
The expectations for the project include:
- Timeline for completion: The project will be completed over a period of 3 weeks.
- Guidelines for writing and content: Students are expected to conduct thorough research and present their findings clearly and in an organized manner. Each project needs to be geography fair-ready in 3 weeks and understandable so that another student could easily know what was created or written.
- Strategies for families to support the student: Families can assist by providing resources, discussing the project with the student, and offering encouragement. Remember to allow the student to guide the project with your assistance for support.
Types of Projects and Strategies
for students to choose:
When selecting a project, students should consider their interests, available resources, and scope. We want the students to show their style.

Research projects:
Students investigate a location and present their findings. Students could write a 3 -4 paragraph paper or a slide show.

Design Projects:
Students create a drawing or model of a landmark or important person in the culture of the place they researched. Include a description paragraph of what you are making.

Map Projects:
Students research a location online, create a map of the area, and label landmarks and significant sites.
“I am excited to see the depth of knowledge and insight Oh, The Places Geography Fair will showcase. These students truly see the world in their unique way!.”
